Trust and Obey
by Carol Lowe“For You are my hope, O Lord God; You are my trust from my youth.” Psalm 71:5 Why does it seem easier to disobey than to obey? Why does it appear that it’s easier to bend or break the rules to suit our selfish need than to live by them? To be born in a world of sin is the downfall of mankind, yet the opportunity to be set free from our sin and shame if we only hear and obey the voice of our Heavenly Father, which is true liberty. So many people today have major hurts at the hands of their earthly fathers and mothers, and forgiveness is a foreign word. Our Heavenly Father is blameless, yet often blamed for all the hurt and defeat in our life. Our God is a good God worthy of our praise, for Jesus alone is able to save us from our sin and shame, forgiving those who ask for forgiveness, delivering us from evil. As a little girl in church we learned a song which Holy Spirit often brings to my remembrance. The line I most often sing is, “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” This is simple, yet difficult, unless our relationship with Jesus is all consuming. I remember a scene in the last Indiana Jones movie where Indiana has to cross over a crevasse to get to the other side, where the supposed cup of Christ is being guarded and there “appears” to be no way. Indiana mumbles the rules, as it is a leap of faith to cross over. Bending down, he picks up a handful of dirt and rocks, throws it out over the vastness, at which a path “suddenly appears” and he crosses over to the other side. To me that was a visual of having faith to believe in the power of trusting and obeying. Moses was a close friend of God, so close that God spoke to him face to face and allowed him to see His form (Numbers 12:6-8). But even Moses dealt with some disobedience towards God. Numbers 20:1-12 tells of Moses’ seemingly small act of disobedience that cost him greatly. In verse 8 God gives Moses simple rules to follow in how to provide water for the children of Israel a second time. Moses heard God clearly, but chooses to do it the way he had before, which was to strike the rock, instead of the new way – to speak to the rock. God was displeased with Moses. His disobedience and lack of trust cost Moses dearly. He was not allowed to bring the children of Israel into the Promised Land. When we hear the voice of our Father and then trust and obey His Word, it strengthens and empowers us to overcome whatever the devil throws at us, for he is still roaming the earth seeking whom he may destroy. But, in Jesus, all things are possible. Time is short, and more and more days are being filled with calamity and disaster. Be not afraid but seek repentance and the fear of the Lord, for in the shelter of His great love is peace that passes all understanding. The Lord has said in His Word that He will never leave us nor forsake us, and that is truth. With all the noise of life we must continue to hone our hearing of our Father’s voice. “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.” Isaiah 30:21 The world is facing difficult and evil things every day, and soon the end will come. Will we trust and obey our Father in Heaven, doing what we hear Holy Spirit say? Or will we continue to negotiate for our way? Or just simply ignore His voice? “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” Revelations 3:22 Prayer DirectivesPersonal
